Not a week goes by without one of the Kardashian-Jenner clan posting a nailfy (nail-selfie, of course). Their signature shape is long, coffin like. Maybe matte. Almost always nude. Although I love the coffin shape (it’s surprisingly finger-flattering) I prefer mine short and square (way more manageable). And recently, in a bid to emulate Kylie Jenner nails I picked up one of my favourite nude nail polishes, a matte topcoat and got to work on a matte nude nail look.
These particularly Kylie Jenner nails are so easy to accomplish. It’s like 2/10 on the effort level – it just takes a steady hand and a little patience.
There are so many nude colours to choose from but one of my favourites is OPIs Tickle My France-y. It’s a shade you’ll return to time again. Subtle, chic, elegant; Tickle My France-y is a pinky nude and looks great on almost every skin tone. Whether matte or super glossy it’s an amazing polish to have lying around as little chips don’t appear really noticeable. Other good nudes include OPI’s Don’t Bossa Nova Me Around and Essie’s Topless & Barefoot. You can also pick up a matte topcoat easily. These vary from the chalk-like matte effects to the velvet matte finishes. My Jessica Matte Topcoat strikes a balance between the two; a matte finish that’s pretty and soft.
When it comes to a Kylie Jenner nails, the main thing to remember is preparation is key. I’m a firm believer that the better you prepare your nails, the better your manicure will look. It’s definitely worth investing in a good nail file and some orangewood sticks to clear up any accidental polish mistakes.
Don’t be put off by my thorough preparation steps though, I’m a trained nail tech so I’m bound to be a stickler for cuticle work and nail filing…If you take one thing from these first prep steps, it should be the tips on nail filing.
So here’s my Kylie Jenner nails tutorial….
What you need: File, orange wood stick, OPI Bond Aid, basecoat, nude nail polish and matte topcoat
Start by removing any old nail polish and pushing back your cuticles. You can do this by gently pushing back the skin around your nails – I use a cuticle pusher by OPI but an orangewood stick will also suffice. Next, file your nails into a uniform shape. I like mine short and square because it’s just so much easier when you’re using a keyboard all day…But those that have a higher tolerance for tapping noises, feel free to attempt a coffin shape. Try and make sure all your nails are even (I plan on doing a more thorough blog on filing tips in the near future!). Try not to seesaw your file back and forward across your nails. Instead, use long, sweeping strokes to file your nails into an even shape. The best piece of advice I can give? Take your time.
Next, I use this amazing product by OPI called Bond Aid. It temporarily dehydrates the nail plate so the polishes adhere properly to your nails. You simply coat all your nails with Bond Aid and leave to air dry for just a few seconds.
Always apply a base coat. I’ve used this Jessica Reward Basecoat that’s also a nourishing treatment. One of my top no-chip-tips is to always coat the ends of your nails. Nail techs call this ‘capping’. Do this by simply running the brush along the tips of your nails to make sure they’re coated in product. Don’t re-load your brush with base coat, just use what’s left on the brush after painting each nail.
Apply two coats of your chosen nude. It’s always better to apply two thin coats of polish as opposed to one thick coat. Not only will your Kylie Jenner nails last longer this way, it’ll give a more even colour pay off. Plus it’ll dry quicker. As you can see, Tickle Me France-y is slightly sheer after one coat, but after the second coat, it goes opaque.
Now apply your matte top coat.
Allow to dry fully. Really try and leave it as long as possible before doing anything. If I do mine before bed I try and slip into bed before lying with my hands crossed across my chest, outside of the duvet. I’m pretty sure Puppy Daddy must think I’m mad, but there’s nothing worse than spending time on your nails – painstakingly painting each one perfectly – only to get duvet dents. Agree? Once dry, apply a few drops of cuticle oil and rub into the skin around your nails.
Now you’re done! I hope you enjoy your Kylie Jenner nails…
Until next time,
