Kylie Jenner’s lips = life goals. I can’t remember the point where I stopped watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians for Kim alone, and instead started watching it to see Kylie’s make up looks. It was like the combination of her new short haircut and MAC’s Spice lip liner suddenly put Kylie on the map and together with her constant risqué posts on Instagram, she easily made it into my top 3 favourite Kardashians of all time. A list that, although not exhaustive, is completely necessary. So, the journey to re-creating Kylie’s lip look began. But trying to re-create the Kylie Jenner lip is way harder than first anticipated. Let me explain:
- MAC sold out of lip liners Spice and Soar (another Kylie fave) making them literally impossible to get your hands on. There are obviously way too many Kylie fans living in Brighton.
- Kylie has lip fillers. Which means us less voluptuous-lipped ladies have to make do with some sneaky make up tricks.
- When I finally did find MAC’s Spice, it was just too dark for my complexion. I didn’t look half as cool as Kylie and looked totally washed out. Typical.
So, what’s a kylie-jenner-lip obsessive supposed to do? We’re not a breed that give up easily.
First, look for similar tones to the Kylie-esque shades. There are some ultra-flattering colours in MAC. If you can get your hands on Soar, give it a go, its pink hue complements most skin tones. Whirl is another great alternative. It has a more mocha finish and suits my sister beautifully. It’s the perfect balance of dusty pink and nude brown. But, in the end, I opted for MAC lipstick in Patisserie. It’s a more natural looking shade and is so moisturising it’s great, if like me, you prefer a more nourishing lipstick. We can all agree that chapped lips are so not Kylie.
So I thought I’d give you some tips for Kylie Jenner lips, no matter what shade you opt for.
Start by exfoliating your lips. I love Lush’s Bubble gum lips scrub, but if you don’t have one, you can also use a toothbrush. Gently run the toothbrush over your lips in circular motions.
Use a touch of Paw Paw or MAC’s lip primer to prepare your lips and offer a touch of nourishment. Only use a tiny bit of product though, as Paw Paw goes a long way and you don’t want the products you’re about to apply slide off your lips.
Outline your lips in a shade that’s close to your natural lip colour. Whereas traditionally you may stick to lining your lips within their natural parameters, to make them appear plumper, take your lip pencil and gently run it just around the outside of your lips. We’re just talking about fractionally outlining them – it shouldn’t look too noticeable, just like you’re having a really good lip day. I use Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liner in Soft Pink as it’s really close to my natural lip colour.
Use MAC’s Patisserie to fill in your lips. A shade like Patisserie will really give you a more naturally plump effect that’s so wearable. For added precision, you can use a lip brush, but I prefer to apply it straight from the lipstick itself.
Add shadow. I’ve used a Naked 2 eye shadow from the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette to add a touch of shade just below my bottom lip. This little trick creates a small shadow that really enlarges the look of your lips without being too obvious.
Add light. From the same Urban Decay Naked Basics palette I use Venus to highlight my cupids bow. I’ve also added a touch more concealer here just before applying the eye shadow to really highlight this area. I do this every day. It’s the most subtle touch but really elevates your whole lip look. I prefer a subtle shimmer as opposed to using a light concealer as it makes the lips look way more dimensional.
Leni is obsessed with my make up so I had a job keeping her out of reach as you can see, but I think she deserves a treat for being so patient…She does put up with me watching a lot of KUWK after all.
Until next time,
